Face lift

bbaThe top operation of cosmetic surgery

Gravity and ageing affect the face in a way that is difficult to control. This is why, gradually, at the edge of the eyebrow, loosens up and the eyelids’ skin becomes ‘heavier’, thus creating puff bags and black circles around your eyes.

The face’s ‘cheeks’ move towards the nasolabial fold, which become more and more obvious, the cheeks are stretched towards the face’s outline and the neck’s skin sags and thus wrinkles are created.

Facelift is the solution to all of the above. This is the top operation of cosmetic surgery. This is an operation performed according to each particular demand, thoroughly or partially in the neck, face, cheekbones, forehead and brows. For the operation it is required two days hospitalization and general anaesthesia. The sections made are very fine and the scars are healed very soon. The stitches are very few, usually self-absorbed.

In contrary to the widely-spread aspect, there is no serious relapse of skin ageing, exactly the opposite, since it follows the normal procedure. The operation is performed under partial or general anaesthesia, having met and discussed before with the anaesthesiologist as far as the operation is concerned.

It is absolutely necessary to quit smoking three weeks in advance and three weeks after the operation, so as to diminish the possibilities of wrong healing, due to inadequate blood supply and to completely avoid aspirins the past weeks. Let your hair grow so that it’s long enough to hide the incisions after the operation. Incisions usually begin above the hairline, extend in a natural line round the ears in a natural fold or behind the gristle and they end behind ear in the hairline. Small incisions under chin and hair must be done sometimes.

With the operation the muscles are tightened, as well as the skin and the fat on the surface. Excess skin is removed and stitched. This is a several-hour operation, depending on how many sections in face we have to work.

A drainage tube and gauze is placed and you’ll stay in hospital for one or two days. After the surgery, you will have a feeling of tension in your face for 2-3 days. In case of significant discomfort pain alleviating medicine is prescribed. There will also be a swelling which is quite normal. It will be more intense for 3-4 days and then it will disappear gradually.

Drainage tube and gauzes will be removed the following day after the operation. Stitches will be removed from your face in a week and from your scalp in two weeks. You may be up next day, nevertheless two weeks of relax are necessary. Avoid sun exposure for a month (otherwise blotches will appear) and use a high protection sunscreen.

Don’t worry about your face looking swelled the first days, your facial movements different and the scars visible. A partial discomfort is not rare to appear right after the operation but there are no further consequences.

By the third week you’ll look much better. Most patients take some time off their works, about two weeks usually. After that time, go back to your work normally and use some camouflage makeup to cover bruising that remains. You’ll be completely satisfied; however you should realize that the final result will not be immediately apparent. After the swelling is gone, you’ll feel dryness in your skin and your hair will look thinner for some months around your temples, while men will have to shave as well in new places where areas of beard-growing skin have been repositioned or to proceed later with a permanent hair removal in specific areas.

As time passes by, scars will be less and less visible and they will be hidden by your hair. Of course, the operation does not prevent the ageing process and maybe you will consider of repeating the procedure after 5-10 years. Bear in mind that the result lasts for years and you’ll look better than if you’d never had a facelift at all.

Quit smoking, as it delays healing of your incision areas, it can lead to a partial skin loss and makes scars looking more visible. Pains and swellings, implying the existence of hematomas and infections, might demand a second operation if they are considered as serious.

It is registered in the bibliography a case of injury of the facial nerve responsible for the mimic movement. It exists in the forehead area and the cheeks. This is back to normal in the next coming weeks. Permanent loss is rare, nevertheless such cases has been reported to the medical bibliography.

Empty cheekbones, sagged cheeks, deep wrinkle on the nasolabial fold and sagged face outline, are the characteristics implying that it is necessary to proceed to the aforementioned operation.
This is the basis of face lifting; then follows the general face lift procedure.
